1. Hot Hands

Hot Poc pouches are made to be enjoyed in the outdoors, which is why our current collection features the Hot Hand in different activities.

2. The Pouch

The pouch is safely made of PVC and can be in direct contact with the skin, whether or not the Hot Poc is activated.

Please avoid applying the activated Hot Poc directly on a baby’s skin, as they tend to be more sensitive to heat.

3. The Liquid

The liquid inside the Hot Poc is non-toxic and made of two ingredients: water and acetate sodium, which is a big scientific name for what we commonly call salt. In other words, the solution is simply a super-saturated mixture of salted water.

4. The Metal Disc

This simple, yet essential piece can be considered the heart of the Hot Poc. It is literally a floating piece of metal inside the pouch with one crucial role. When it is bent or “clicked”, its interaction with the liquid triggers the heat reaction for you to enjoy.

Let’s take a stroll down memory lane, all the way back to your high school chemistry class.

The Key Ingredient

Every Hot Poc hand warmer contains water mixed with a very salty ingredient called sodium acetate. In order to dissolve as much sodium acetate as possible, the solution was heated during the manufacturing process. Remember this last part, it will be important later on.

From Crystal Clear to Opaque

When the metal disc is “clicked” or bent, microscopic pieces of metal are released, which creates “nucleation sites”. When in contact with these sites, the liquid changes from liquid to solid, a process called crystallization.

As the rapper Nelly would say, “it’s getting hot in here”.Up to 57°C, to be precise. That’s because the stored heat in the salty liquid is released (as mentioned in step 1). A savvy scientist would call this an “exothermic reaction”, but we prefer the term “eco-friendly magic”.

The heat will last between 15 to 60 minutes, depending on the size of your Hot Poc. Once the magic is over, the process needs to be reversed before you can reuse it. Simply reset the Hot Poc by placing it in boiling water for approximately five minutes. The crystals will absorb the heat and liquefy. For additional satisfaction, you can shout “Yeah, Science!” like Jesse from Breaking Bad.
